I always find writing about myself to be difficult, even though I certainly am the most qualified to share the details of my life. Maybe I’m just not an interesting person, but somehow it always seems so boring and serious. Getting to know someone has to be a dynamic and reciprocal experience, which is hard to convey with just an “about me” section. I’m not suggesting the feel of my handshake or an in-depth investigation into my childhood is needed, but introducing myself will require a little more than just the basics.

To set the scene, though, let’s start with the following:

Sunset in San Diego.
Sunset in San Diego.

My name is Kayley Edgin, and I’m a senior at Marquette University studying Corporate Communication, Advertising, and Asian Studies. I left my hometown of sunny San Diego, CA because I wanted to torture myself with one of the worst winter climates in the United States: Wisconsin. I studied abroad in South Korea, learned the language, and fell in love with the city of Seoul. I like travel, interior design, makeup, and the color black.  My hobbies include sleeping till noon, talking too much, and shopping at Goodwill.

My other half, Robert,
My other half, Robert,

I consider myself a good listener when I’m not talking, and I can count on one hand the things I care most about; my family, my friends, the well-being and happiness of the former, my health, and my future.

My home-away-from-home-away-from-home, South Korea.

I’ve dabbled in a lot of academic disciplines, and never thought I’d be where I am today. I thought I’d maybe be digging up thousand year-old pottery in a desert climate, or reading a dusty tome in a quiet library (which, if you haven’t yet discovered, would not be ideal for a Chatty Cathy like myself). Now I find myself preparing for a life in a global, corporate, and hopefully creative environment.

I (obviously) don't take myself too seriously.
I (obviously) don’t take myself too seriously.

How do I do that? By being open to everything. Now, I’m not advocating indulging in vices of any sort, rather I think that not being afraid to say “yes, I will challenge myself” can open a lot doors to things you never would have encountered otherwise. I’m not afraid to admit that I don’t understand something, but I will also never be ashamed to ask questions until I do.

My happy place.
My happy place.

But, in all honesty, and decided silliness aside, I consider myself ambitious, empathetic, and resilient. Like everyone else, I’ve experienced my share of life’s ups and downs, but I truly believe that the life I am meant to lead is purposefully caused by those experiences. They have caused me to learn not only about myself, but the world in which I live, play, and work. I don’t know how I’ll navigate the rest of my life, or even next week, but with an open mind and hunger for new adventures, I think I’ll be okay.

My kitty-baby, Aspen.

TL;DR: I like heavy metal, sweet tea, dad jokes, and eating in my car. I’m head over heels in love with my boyfriend, but my kitty has my heart. I don’t know anything about anything, but I’m trying to learn, and I think I’m a pretty good person to boot.

Hi Kayley, I read your essay on Hwang Jin Yi. It is impressive how well you researched your subject. Thank you for your efforts. Good that you received an award for your efforts. I am sure you have watched Hwang Jin Yi. Tonight I am watching episode 24. Just need to remember to bring some kleenex! Keep up the great work! Scott Tenney
